Ingredients

You can manage FeedComp on PULSE ingredients on the Ingredients page. The page lists all ingredients in use at your dairy in a card format. You can find this feature under the FeedComp Menu.

1. Search, Sort, and Filter the Ingredients List

   Options to search, sort, and filter the ingredients list are available at the top of the page. Follow the guidelines below when working with the ingredients list:

   • Click Filters at the top left of the page to limit the data that is displayed. The Filters side panel opens.
   • Type text in the Ingredient Name field to search the list of ingredients by name.
   • Select an Ingredient Type to limit the list to a specific type of ingredient. Multiple types can be selected. You can also type text directly in the field to search for ingredients by name.
   • Select a Location to limit the list to a specific location. Multiple locations can be selected. You can also type text directly in the field to search for locations by name.
   • Active ingredients are displayed by default. Check the Show Inactive box to view all available ingredients in the list.
   • Click the Clear Filters option to clear all of the filters currently applied.
   • Select an option in Sort By at the top right of the page to change how the page is sorted.
   • Select an option in View Rows Per Page to change how many records are displayed on the page, and click the navigation options to jump to a specific page.
2. Create New Ingredient

   Click Add Ingredient at the top right of the page to open the side panel and enter information for the ingredient. Follow the guidelines below when adding ingredients:

   • The Ingredient Name entered must be unique and cannot match the name of existing ingredient.
   • If you're adding a weighback Feed leftover from the day before, which helps dairies track the actual amount of feed the animals consumed. ingredient, be sure to select "Weighback Feed leftover from the day before, which helps dairies track the actual amount of feed the animals consumed." as the Ingredient Type.
   • In Load Tolerance, enter the weight tolerance allowed when loading the ingredient into the mixer A piece of farm equipment that mixes all the loaded ingredients for a feed recipe. Mobile mixers are most common, but stationary mixers also exist.. The unit of measurement is displayed in pounds or kilograms based on your account settings in PULSE. See Edit Your User Account to learn more.
   • Click + Add Location to add a location for the ingredient. Once a location is selected, enter the DM% Dry Matter Percentage, and Cost and select the Unit or Ton option. You can add multiple locations for the ingredient if necessary.
   • Once you've added the information, click Save.
3. View Ingredient Cards

   Follow the guidelines below when viewing ingredient cards:

   • Ingredient Name: The ingredient name is displayed at the top left of the card.
   • Details: Click the Details link at the top right of an ingredient card to View Ingredient Details.
   • Type: The ingredient type in a color-coded label.

     • Dry Forage: Vegetative material, such as stems, leaves, and stalks of plants, in a dried state that is used for feed.
     • Fresh Forages: A crop of cultivated plants or plant parts that are grazed or harvested as feed.
     • Silage: Preserved forage for feed, like pasture grass, alfalfa, grains, and corn, that is produced by fermenting plant matter.
     • Energy: High-calorie feed, such as corn, sorghum, barley, and wheat.
     • Protein: High-protein feed, such as soy and canola.
     • Vitamins and Minerals: Supplements added to feed to prevent deficiencies in dairy cows that can impact health and milk production.
     • Additives: Products added to feed to enhance feed quality, make the feed more digestible, and improve health and performance.
     • Weighback: Feed leftover from a prior feeding that can be added to a recipe A combination of ingredients used to make feed for animals and help reduce waste.
     • Water: Water added to a feed mixture to improve daily milk yield.
   • Load Tolerance: The weight tolerance allowed when loading the ingredient into the mixer. The unit of measurement is displayed in pounds or kilograms based on your account settings in PULSE. See Edit Your User Account to learn more.
   • Location: The name of the location where the ingredient is currently stored.
   • DM%: The dry matter The dry weight of an ingredient with no mositure percentage for the ingredient. If the ingredient is stored in multiple locations, values are displayed for each separate location.
   • AF Cost/Ton: The as-fed (AF As fed) unit cost per ton for the ingredient. If the ingredient is stored in multiple locations, values are displayed for each separate location.
4. View Ingredient Details

   Click the Details link at the top right of an ingredient card to view the ingredient's details. The Ingredient Details page opens. Follow the guidelines below when viewing ingredient details:

   • Current On-Hand AF: The amount that is currently available on hand as‑fed (AF) in tons.
   • Daily AF: The daily as-fed (AF) amount in tons.
   • Days Left: The estimated number of days remaining before the current on-hand amount is depleted.
   • AF Projections: As-fed (AF) projections for the next 30, 60, and 90 days.
   • Edit Ingredient: Click Edit Ingredient at the top right of the page to open the side panel and update information for the ingredient or remove the ingredient from a location. See Edit Ingredient or Remove Ingredients from a Location for more information.
   • Ingredient Usage by Recipes: A list of recipes A combination of ingredients used to make feed for animals that currently use the ingredient as well as other recipe details such as the dry matter (DM The dry weight of an ingredient with no mositure) weight per head, as-fed (AF) weight per head, pens fed using the recipe, and the daily as-fed (AF) usage of the ingredient (which shows the real as-fed (AF) amount used to feed all pens fed using the recipe). The unit of measurement is displayed in pounds or kilograms based on your account settings in PULSE. See Edit Your User Account to learn more.
   • Locations: A list of locations where the ingredient is currently stored as well as other location details such as the dry matter (DM) percentage and the as-fed (AF) unit cost per ton.
5. Edit Ingredient

   Click the Details link at the top right of an ingredient card to update the ingredient's details. The Ingredient Details page opens. Click Edit Ingredient at the top right of the page. From here, you can change the ingredient details, and:

   • Deactivate Ingredient
   • Reactivate Ingredient
   • Remove Ingredients from a Location

   TIP: Don't see the ingredient? Click Filters at the top left of the page and then check the Show Inactive box to view all available ingredients in the list.
6. Deactivate or Reactivate Ingredients

   Deactivate Ingredient

   1. Click the Details link at the top right of an ingredient card to view the ingredient's details. The Ingredient Details page opens.
   2. Click Edit Ingredient at the top right of the page. The Edit Ingredient side panel opens.
   3. Click the Active Ingredient toggle to deactivate the ingredient.
   4. Click Save.

   NOTE: An ingredient used in a recipe cannot be deactivated, but you can remove the ingredient from the recipe and then deactivate it. See Recipes for more information.

   Reactivate Ingredient

   1. Click Filters at the top left of the page.
   2. Check the Show Inactive box to view all available ingredients in the list.
   3. Click the Details link at the top right of an ingredient card to view the ingredient's details. The Ingredient Details page opens.
   4. Click Edit Ingredient at the top right of the page. The Edit Ingredient side panel opens.
   5. Click the Active Ingredient toggle to activate the ingredient.
   6. Click Save.
7. Remove Ingredients from a Location

   1. Click the Details link at the top right of an ingredient card to view the ingredient's details. The Ingredient Details page opens.
   2. Click Edit Ingredient at the top right of the page. The Edit Ingredient side panel opens, and all locations associated with the ingredient are displayed under Locations.
   3. Click the delete icon on the right side of a location to remove it.
